MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) - A shocking crime in Mooresville has a neighborhood on edge and police searching for clues.
Early Tuesday morning, a man broke into a home in the Gabriel Estates subdivision. The suspect shot and killed Matthew Ryan Stewart, and he also shot Stewart's wife, Angela.
Stewart was shot in the arm, but she grabbed her 2-year-old in the other arm and ran for help at a neighbor's house.
When officers arrived, they found her her husband, Matthew Ryan Stewart, shot to death inside the house.
Two of the couple's three children were at home at the time, but they were not hurt.
The chief of the Mooresville Police Department called in the SBI. He told WBTV this is a very strange case and his detectives are putting all of their resources into helping the SBI.
Tuesday afternoon, neighbors in Gabriel Estates were holding their children's hands tightly. Many were walking down to the house where the Stewart family lived.
Residents in this community told WBTV they were afraid and there wasn't much police can say to calm those fears.
Mooresville police say they need to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the neighborhood around midnight. If you know anything about the shooting, call 704-664-3311.
