Harvey B. Gantt Center ready for its ‘Golden Year’ celebration

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture is kicking off its 50th anniversary with a bang.

On Tuesday, the Harding University High School Band started the celebration, as the community gathered at the center to hear about all the activities for The Gantt Center’s golden year in 2024.

Organizers say the anniversary celebration will include performances from the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the musical group ‘The Sounds of Blackness,’ and other award-winning artists, chefs and authors.

Leaders believe the center has made its mark on the Charlotte community these past 50 years.

“We’ve been all about preserving African American history and culture here. We have become a social force in that we are educating young people we’re educating the community as we make Charlotte a more equitable place to live,” Bonita Buford, The Gantt Center’s chief operating officer, said.
