WEDDINGTON, N.C. (WBTV) - People who live in Weddington received a chance Monday to tell town leaders what they think of a proposed development that will include homes, shops a park and a greenway.

It’s a controversial project some worry would transform the town in a way they’re not comfortable with.

The empty space just across the road at the corner of Providence Road South and Weddington Road is where a developer wants to build Weddington Green.

A rendering of the project shows the 85-acre plot would include 168 homes, boutiques, restaurants, a park, a greenway and an outdoor amphitheater

The developer, Provident Land, says Weddington Green would serve as a town center with a main street that would fit in with the town’s culture and enhance it.

However, more than 2,700 people have signed a petition against the project saying the roads and schools are already full. They don’t want to see another shopping center like Waverly in south Charlotte.

They packed a hearing last month telling council members their concerns.

The developer argues Weddington Green offers all the things residents say they want. It also offers homes on smaller lots that are easier for older people to maintain.

The earliest a vote could be made would be at the next meeting on May 9.
