Chants and lingo to know before Charlotte FC’s inaugural home match at Bank of America Stadium
Unlike other sports, fans should know a few things about soccer terminology.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - We’re fewer than 24 hours away from matchday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
Unlike other sports, fans should know a few things about soccer terminology.
It’s not a game - it’s a match, people around the world call it football, and teams are called clubs.
WBTV talked to fans and Blue Furia, one of the official supporter groups about things to know for matchday tomorrow.
Chants are being rehearsed and people are picking up Charlotte FC gear with a day until kick-off.
“Pretty exciting man, like inaugural year, it’s going to be huge here, a lot of people are supposed to come out so I’m excited,” Jacob Fulper, a Charlotte FC Fan said.
“I’m looking so forward to the energy, I’m super pumped, it’s going to be my first tailgate too, so this is like a first for me in everything,” Deni Diaz, Charlotte FC Fan added.
“This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for for a long time,” David Carrasco, the Co-Founder of Blue Furia said.
People new to soccer and the MLS should know the following when it comes to futbol terminology:
“Some of the main ones is obviously the field right, we’re used to that term, we call it a pitch that’s one of the big terms, a jersey, it’s called a kit,” said Carrasco.
Unlike professional sports like the NFL and NBA where fans are yelling, MLS fans are big on chants and singing, and more:
“A lot of flags, instruments, energy chants, passion, it’s all going to be coming out and that’s what I envision for this first game and that’s what really soccer is to us,” Carrasco said.
Another MLS staple: scarves, it’s a tradition from Europe, it represents the club you’re supporting. It’s something you can wear or twirl it when you get in the moment.
“Really looking forward to now creating a new tradition here in Charlotte and backing that team up all the way,” Carrasco.
Blue Furia tells me there are 18 official chants for Charlotte FC and you can check them out on SoundCloud. A decent amount are in Spanish or have a mix of Spanish and English.
