CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Police have charged an 18- and 19-year-old with the murder of a person in south Charlotte on Wednesday night.
CMPD detectives charged 18-year-old Mario Alexander Monroy and 19-year-old Andy Jonathan Garcia for the murder of 29-year-old Selvin Yovani Lara-Reyes.
Monroy and Garcia were charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony breaking and entering.
The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday on Oak Meadow Court.
Officers found a person, later identified as Lara-Reyes, with an apparent gunshot wound. Lara-Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 7-year-old was also shot, but their condition is unknown.
The shooting comes after a string of violence around the city over the past several days. CMPD officers say it is taking a toll on them and the community and must be stopped.
“It’s been extremely violent over the last few days. It’s disheartening,” said CMPD Major Cecil Brisbon. “As I was driving to this scene tonight I was at a loss for words thinking about what I would say to you and your viewers. As a community I think we’re all suffering. We’ve seen one too many victims in this year already and the word ‘unfortunate’ doesn’t even come close to explaining how it is.”
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
