CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A person killed in a shooting Monday evening in north Charlotte has been identified by police as 29-year-old Ryan Devon Autry.

The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. on West Sugar Creek Road. Officials arrived to find a man, later identified as Autry, dead with a gunshot wound.

Charlotte resident Eddie Ingram told WBTV he does his shopping near where the deadly shooting took place. He goes to the ATM, and said he is not used to seeing violence there.

“Very disappointed,” Ingram said. “Normally this doesn’t happen in our neighborhood.”

A homicide investigation in the place where many people do routine shopping is unsettling to people who live nearby.

It makes them worried for their own families.

“My parents come up here. This where my parents shop,” Ingram said. “That’s not a good thing.”

Police descended on the immediate area Monday night. Detectives taped off a large portion of the parking lot.

Officers were searching the ground surrounding the homicide scene.

“Having kids, you know, they see a bunch of cop cars and they get nervous so as a parent, you wanna make sure you’re living in a safe area,” Charlotte resident Mina Johnson said.

CMPD Maj. Cecil Brisbon said Monday night’s killing marks the city’s 22nd homicide of 2021.

“I never want to have a conversation about homicides without talking about the other family members that are still looking for some support and that’s the main thing that we’re here for today is to ask the public if anybody saw anything out here,” Brisbon said.

No arrests have been made.

There were plenty of people around Monday night.

Brisbon hopes one of them may know something about the person or people responsible for the killing.

“There’s always a good Samaritan out there who’s willing to tell people what they saw to be helpful and I’m hoping that that person is watching the newscast tonight and is able to come forward and provide some answers,” Brisbon said.

Police said they’ve had a few people come forward to talk to them about the killing, but the information they provided was pretty generic.

Autry’s family has been notified of his death.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit detective. The public can also leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or
