HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A missing persons case has turned into a homicide investigation, according to the Horry County Police Department.
Mary Ann Elvington, 80, was reported missing on Sunday and was last seen near Highway 76 in Nichols.
During the search, her white 2012 Buick LaCrosse was found unoccupied along Bobby L. Davis Boulevard in Marion County.
Around 6:45 p.m. Monday, remains believed to be Elvington’s were found behind a grocery store in the Zion community of Marion County, according to the authorities.
“The Marion County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this heinous crime as a homicide along with Horry County Police Department and the State Law Enforcement Division,” according to a post by HCPD.
The manner of death has not been released in the case.

“We sincerely appreciate the diligence and exceptional work by our neighboring agencies. While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we will not rest until this crime is solved,” HCPD posted on Facebook.
