CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - In an effort to speed up vaccine distribution, Novant Health and Atrium Health have plans in the works for mass vaccination sites.

Novant Health has six sites in the works across the state.

The system is working with the Spectrum Center for events in the Charlotte area.

Atrium Health is turning to a public-private partnership.

Atrium Health, Tepper Sports and Entertainment, Honeywell and the Charlotte Motor Speedway are working together to provide a million doses of the vaccine by July 4th.

The sites will be at Bank of America Stadium and the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

According to Honeywell, they could start at the Speedway by the end of this month.

The Charlotte-based company is lending its expertise to help with the technology side of scheduling appointments to efficient day-to-day logistics.

“We have to give a vaccination every 15 seconds from now until July,” Honeywell Chief Supply Chain Officer Torsten Pilz said. “To do this you need large scale operations. Right now the sites could probably do 500-800 vaccinations a day. We want to do 10,000 plus. So if you want to scale something up 10 or 20 times, this is pretty complex.”

Pilz says they hope to create a playbook to share with others across the country wanting to run similar mass vaccination sites.
