CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Wednesday marked a big day in Mecklenburg County as the first mass vaccinations of the public kicked.
People in phase 1B Group 1, anyone 75 or older, were able to get the shot by appointment only through Mecklenburg County and Atrium Health starting Wednesday morning.
Novant Health also began vaccinating patients in this category during a trial run at two locations Tuesday morning.
“I’m excited,” one woman, who goes by MawMaw, said after getting her vaccine at Atrium Health.
Seniors across the county spent the day smiling under their masks.
“I have no side effects and I am so happy that I’ve been vaccinated,” Steven Massa told WBTV after his vaccination at Bojangles Coliseum.
People said the process set up through Mecklenburg County was well organized.
“I went in there at my appointment time, the National Guardsmen took me back, they gave me shot, had to wait 20 minutes to leave and then I’m here!” Charlotte car dealership owner Felix Sabates told WBTV.
He says he feels thankful to get the appointment after all slots for January were filled within hours.
According to a spokesperson for Mecklenburg County, they are offering roughly 350 appointments daily.
“I have underlying issues so it was important for me to get it,” Sabates said. “I’m old!”
For Steven Massa, getting the vaccine puts him one step closer to spending time with loved ones.
“My daughter and son in law and my granddaughter are also here in Charlotte and we try to spend as much time with them,” he said.
Health officials want to remind everyone unable to get an appointment that they can also sign up through Atrium and Novant Health.
“We’re ready to vaccinate as many people as quickly as we can,” Atrium Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Little said.
