CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - An 18-year-old was killed in a shooting in Caldwell County Tuesday afternoon.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office says no one has been charged at this time.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. at the Market Basket store on 321 A in Sawmills. Deputies were dispatched to an incomplete 911 call at the store.
Officials said two people were taken to an area hospital and one was in critical condition, and later died.
Investigators determined this shooting stemmed from an incident that happened at Bolick’s Tire, a neighboring business on the previous day. On Monday, Jan. 4, at 9:57 a.m., officials say an employee of Bolick’s Tire reported that he was threatened with a gun after asking the person to leave the property. The employee indicated the person, identified only as wearing a red jacket,. was asked to leave after approaching several customers of the business and requesting money and transportation. Deputies responded to the report but were unable to located the person with the red jacket.
The investigation revealed that prior to the shooting another employee of Bolick’s Tire observed a person matching the description of the person with the red jacket who reportedly pointed the gun at their co-worker walking into the Market Basket and notified their co-worker of the information. The employee who made the report about the incident the previous day immediately went to the Market Basket. Shortly after going inside, two additional employees of Bolick’s Tire also walked over to the Market Basket.
Officials say a fight started inside of the store between the employee that filed the report and the person in the red jacket. The fight eventually stopped and the two people were separated. The employee of Market Basket requested all those involved to leave.
Uninvolved witnesses indicated when the person in the red jacket left the store, he took out a gun and fired multiple shots.
Two of the rounds that were fired struck one of the Bolick’s employees who was not in the fight. The employee that was struck took out a small caliber handgun and fired multiple rounds hitting the person in the red jacket.
The second employee of Bolick’s Tire who wasn’t in the fight left the store earlier and also took out a gun and fired one round.
Both people who received gunshot wounds were transported from the scene by EMS.
Investigators have identified the person in the red jacket as 18-year-old Cedrick Jovon Harshaw. Harshaw later died as a result of the gunshot wounds.
The Bolick’s employee who received gunshot wounds was treated and later released from medical care.
Investigators are in communication with the Local District Attorney’s Office regarding the circumstances of this incident.
