BURNSVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - What started as a duck hunting trip ended in a deadly accident early New Year’s Day in Union County.

Officers with North Carolina State Highway Patrol say six individuals were riding together in a F-350 on NC 218, near Burnsville Road, when the truck went off the road and struck a tree. The accident occurred around 4 a.m.

The driver and one passenger, identified as Garrison Smith and Shad Little, died at the scene. They were 19 and 21 years old, respectively.

The other four passengers were taken to an area hospital for treatment. While three of the passengers have been released, one remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Troopers say the group was on their way to go duck hunting.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, although speed is not believed to be a factor.

This is a developing story.
