Coldest air of the season arrives Tuesday, with a First Alert for the mountains

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The NC mountains are under a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations 3500 feet and below, where a trace to 4 inches of snowfall is expected into Tuesday.

Elevations above 3500 feet are under a Winter Storm Warning, where 3″ to 9″+ of snowfall is expected into Tuesday.

The piedmont will see more sunshine for Tuesday, with the coldest air of the season arriving for the entire WBTV viewing area.

Tonight will feature snow showers for the NC mountains, with clearing skies and cold temperatures for the Piedmont. Overnight low temperatures will range from the lower 20s in the mountains, to lower 30s in the Piedmont.

Tuesday will feature mostly sunny skies with high temperatures in the upper 40s for the Piedmont.

The NC mountains will continue to have scattered snow showers through the day Tuesday, with high temperatures only reaching the upper 20s.

Frigid temperatures develop for Wednesday morning, with low temperatures ranging from the upper teens in the mountains to mid-20s in the Piedmont. Wednesday will feature mostly sunny skies across the WBTV viewing area, with highs in the lower 50s for the Piedmont, and around 40 degrees for the mountains.

High temperatures will stay in the 50s Thursday into the weekend for the Piedmont, with 40s for the mountains.

Extended weather models are having a hard time agreeing on the set-up for this weekend’s weather, yet another chance for scattered rain will be possible Friday into Saturday.
