HICKORY, N.C. (WBTV) - The city of Hickory has canceled this year’s Christmas tree lighting event.

A press release sent out Nov. 18 cites concerns following Gov. Roy Cooper’s recent briefing on COVID-19 at Catawba County’s listing as an orange level alert.

The event was scheduled for Nov. 20.

A virtual tree lighting will be shared on the city’s website and through their social media.

The city has also announced that Santa will make a “surprise visit” to light the tree in the near future. No date has been announced.
