(WBTV) - Several local school districts are announcing closings due to winter weather expected in the WBTV viewing area Thursday.
Watauga County Schools, Ashe County Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Burke County Public Schools, Newton-Conover Schools, Catawba County Schools and the Avery County School System will be closed Thursday, Feb. 20, due to the weather.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Kannapolis Schools and Union County Public Schools will dismiss three hours early Thursday due to the threat of severe weather and the potential of dangerous road conditions.
Iredell-Statesville Schools will operate on an early release schedule for Thursday. The early dismissal process will begin with elementary students at 11 a.m. The Caldwell County School System will have a three-hour early release Thursday.
Wednesday, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools announced the district was canceling all after-school activities for Thursday, Feb. 20. School officials say staff will continue to monitor weather conditions.
Rowan-Salisbury Schools, Rock Hill Schools and Union County Schools say all after-school activities are cancelled for Thursday. The school districts anticipate a normal school schedule, but will continue to closely monitor weather conditions.
UNC Charlotte says classes will be closed effective at 1 p.m.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect as snow will likely start in the North Carolina mountains around daybreak.
Rain is more likely around Charlotte with sunrise readings near 40 degrees. But as the morning unfolds and the precipitation picks up in intensity, temperatures will fall into the 30s changing the rain over to snow for the afternoon.
