Bicyclist killed in east Charlotte hit-and-run identified

Crash kills cyclist, part of road shut down

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Police say someone drove off after striking and killing a bicyclist Saturday night.

The fatal wreck happened before 10 p.m. on Dade Street at The Plaza, closing the area down near Anderson Street.

Members of the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic arrived to the scene to find an unresponsive bicyclist not wearing a helmet.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as 62-year-old Karim Abdul Akbar.

Preliminary investigation shows a car was traveling northeast on The Plaza in the right lane when it the bicyclist crossing the road.

Speed is not a factor in the crash, and detectives are working to determine if alcohol played a role.

Police continue to search for the involved vehicle.
