CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A man who passed away in 2014 was charged in a sexual assault case that happened in Charlotte several decades prior on Friday.
Johnnie Lee Gurley, born in 1942, has been formally connected with an assault case from 1993 in which a 37-year-old woman gardening alone at her church on Lancaster Highway was approached by an armed suspect and sexually assaulted.
Later testing in the case found that Gurley was a match with the suspect identified in the sexual assault kit that was initially completed 26 years prior.
Gurley had previously served 19 years in prison from 1973 until 1992 for a rape case in Jacksonville, NC and returned to prison again in 1994 after violating his parole. Gurley died in 2014.
No further information has been released regarding the case at this time.
