Caldwell deputies growing beards for charity

Caldwell Co. deputies raising money with 'No Shave November'

LENOIR, N.C. (WBTV) - It’s against department policy, but that’s not stopping about 30 deputies and the sheriff himself in the Caldwell County Sheriff’s office from growing beards.

This is not about no-shave November, or an effort to buck the rules- rather, it’s a fundraising effort for charity.

“We’re raising money to buy toys for needy children,” said Captain Aaron Barlowe.

As sort of a fine, anyone growing a beard gives a dollar a day to the pot. Donations have also come in from individuals and businesses. Almost $1,900 have been raised so far.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Sheriff Alan Jones.

Though the policy was bent a bit for this he says it will be enforced come December, if not by the rules themselves, but by the wives. Many deputies say their spouses have not been happy with the look and will make sure they shave the first chance they get.

Jones, meanwhile, says it has gone so well, they might do it again next November.
