Driver killed and passenger injured in Statesville car crash

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - A deadly accident involving one vehicle left a person deceased and a passenger hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Marcia Lane and Westminister Drive.

NC Highway Patrol later confirmed that the driver - identified Monday as 29-year-old Sedrick Lamonte Sloan - was speeding along Westminister Drive and crossed into the other lane before skidding off the road. Sloan was reportedly ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was also ejected from the vehicle. She was rushed to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem. Her condition has not been released.

Investigators say neither Sloan nor the female passenger were wearing a seat belt.

A dog near the scene was also hurt in the crash but troopers say that they don’t believe it was in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

No further information has been released at this time as officials work to clear the scene.
