CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - A horse is OK after getting stuck in a mud-filled pond in Catawba County Thursday morning.
Gideon, a 30-year-old and partly-blind horse, was likely along the water’s edge when he slipped into a pond at Rising Hope Farms overnight. The farm provides horse rides for special needs children.
Gideon was stuck for hours until his owner found him and called for help. The nearly 1,000-pound horse had to be pulled out by a tow truck.
Gail Wartner, Executive Director of Rising Hope Farms, says when the horse was found they tried to help him.
“He couldn’t get himself out and we could not get him out,” Wartner said.
That’s when fire and rescue crews were called in to help.
The effort to save Gideon, Wartner says, was special to watch.
”I want to thank everyone who helped in this,” she said, and despite worries whether the horse could survive what happened, “He is great!”
The horse was checked out and is OK.
Gideon was rescued just before 10:30 a.m.
