CMPD officer charged with giving alcohol to young children

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - CMPD announced on Friday afternoon that detectives with their Crimes Against Children Unit had charged an officer with child abuse.

Officer Robert Milton, 56, is accused of serving alcohol to children ages one and six years old. The one-year-old child was identified as Milton’s biological son and the six year old is the child of a woman he had been in a prior relationship with.

Milton has been formally charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse as a result. He has served with CMPD for seven years but has now been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Chief Kerry Putney released the following statement in response to this announcement, “I am disappointed by this incident. As we honor the men and women in law enforcement this week, it is important that the community understands the overwhelming majority of police officers serve with integrity. Officers who betray their oath and break the law will be held accountable for their actions.”

No further information has been released at this time as CMPD continues to investigate this matter.
