IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 77, partially closing the highway in Statesville Wednesday night.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on I-77 near mile marker 51.
Troopers say the pedestrian was in the travel lanes of the interstate when they were struck.
Police say according to witnesses, the person was standing on the shoulder of the road and darted out in front of a tow truck.
A stretch of I-77 was closed but has since reopened. Officials say three miles of congestion remained in the area late Wednesday night.
The pedestrian has not yet been identified and the investigation continues.
