CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It’s a day most guys who play football look forward to-- the first practice with a NFL team.

Friday morning didn’t provide the best of conditions as heavy rains greeted the newest Panthers as the team held the first day of its rookie mini camp.

33 players were on the practice field at Bank of America Stadium including all 7 of the Panthers 2019 draft picks.

No amount of rain could ruin the day for former Davidson Day star Will Grier. The quarterback took snaps and threw passes with his hometown team as his dream became a reality, but now, the real work begins.

“I’m focused on winning games for the Carolina Panthers,” said Grier. “I’m going to work hard and be coach able. I just want to fit into the system and do whatever it takes to help the Panthers win.”

The team also finally caught a glimpse of the versatility of 1st round draft pick Brian Burns. Coaches had him pass rushing drills as well pass coverage drills and it’s that versatility that has the eye of head coach Ron Rivera.

“When you got guys with different skill sets like that, it give you an opportunity to move guys around,” said coach Rivera. “That’s what we intend to do. You want to keep the offenses off balanced.”

When asked if he preferred to rush the passer or drop back in coverage, the answer was simple for Burns.

“I love sacks, but there’s nothing better than scoring a touchdown,” said Burns. “I still haven’t done that yet at a high level so it would be great to get an interception because I’m taking it back.”
