Video shows apparent abuse of kids at daycare in South Carolina

Video appears to show daycare worker tossing, hitting children in SC

AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WRDW/WAGT/Gray News) – A video of actions inside a daycare classroom helped lead to the arrest of one of its employees accused of abusing children.

On April 23, the Aiken County Department of Public Safety charged Markita Rainey with five counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.

The video, recently released by DPS, shows Rainey walk around the Sunshine House daycare. Kids can be heard crying as Rainey apparently picks up a child with one arm, walk her toward a sleeping mat, then drop her on it.

She does it again to three other children. Also, she reaches across a table, appearing to hit a child.

DPS officials immediately notified parents after watching the footage.

“We want to make sure they know, the staff knows, that way they can look for things, so if other things occur with their child, we can take the appropriate steps,” said a DPS spokesperson.

Aiken DPS says in any case, especially one like Rainey’s, video can be a big help.

"So obviously being able to review that for us helps us either proceed the path we did where charges are filed or if there's accusation, the video would obviously show that it didn't occur and it exonerates this person,” the spokesperson said.

The Sunshine House fired Rainey and another employee for not reporting Rainey’s actions.

Rainey is out on bond, but her next court date is in June.
