SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A Salisbury woman reported a disturbing encounter with a stranger at Walmart in Salisbury on Tuesday evening.
According to the report, the woman was in the parking lot with her two daughters, ages 6 months and 5 years. A man approached and offered her a cart to help take the children inside the store.
“He said ‘looks like you have your hands full today,’ about that time I turned around and he said ‘can I get you a cart?' I just thought he was being polite, allowed him to go get me a cart,” the woman said.
Several minutes later, the mom encountered the man a second time.
“As we moved through the seasonal section, all of a sudden, he was right there out of the blue, and he said ‘there you are,’ addressing my (5-year-old) daughter," the woman said. "He reached out his hand and said ‘let’s go get a toy, come on, come on, let’s go get a toy.’ She didn’t react to him, didn’t engage him in conversation. We swiftly started walking towards one of the toy aisles. He was behind me. He kept asking her ‘why are so shy, don’t you want to talk to me why are you so shy, why are you shy?’ I turned down the board games aisle, actually, and there was a Walmart associate standing there.”
The man was described as white, wearing a white tee shirt, khaki shorts, and sunglasses. The man had white hair and was estimated to be in his late 50′s or early 60′s.
The vehicle was a silver Mitsubishi crossover with a Tennessee license plate.
Police are investigating, but say that no crime was committed.
“A detective has been looking into the incident and although the actions of the person are suspicious, they do not rise to the level of a criminal act and we cannot prove criminal intent,” said Sgt. Russel Desantis.
