West Stanly softball on a state championship mission

OAKBORO, NC (WBTV) - After going 20-0 and steam rolling through the regular season, the West Stanly softball team is the top seed in the 2A playoffs.

A very familiar position for the Lady Colts as they were the top seed last year and rolling along-- until the 4th round and a meeting with Bunker Hill.

“They came in as a 13 seed and beat us,” said West Stanly head coach Craig Carter. “It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”

“Worst end to a season I could ever imagine,” said senior catcher Rosalyn McRae. “That one game changed everything.”

Bunker Hill would win 2-1 and put a cap on a 25-2 season for West.

With that loss as fuel, this Lady Colts team has been on fire this season. In their 20 games, they have only given up 19 runs the entire season. That is less than a run per game. 12 of their 20 wins have come via shutout.

One of the biggest surprises about this team is it is mostly made up of underclassmen. Of the 13 players, 8 or either freshmen or sophomores.

“We have another good year and we don’t wanna stop early again like we did last year,” said sophomore pitcher and Duke commit Jordan Hatch.

But for the 4 seniors and the rest of the Lady Colts, the future is now as they want to complete the unfinished business from last year.

“We all have that chip on our shoulders and we dare anyone to knock it off,” said McRae.

“The last week and a half, we’ve had some great practices,” said coach Carter. “I can see it in their eyes. You can tell they are hungry. They wanna win.”
