Man and woman arrested in Belmont murder investigation

BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - A man and a woman have been charged in connection to a murder after police found a woman dead inside a car that was in a lake in Belmont on May 5.

According to the Belmont Police Department, officers responded to South New Hope Road at the Seven Oaks Bridge around 1:15 a.m on May 5.

Police were responding to a report of a vehicle off the road and in the water. A subsequent investigation revealed a dead woman in the vehicle.

That woman was later identified as 61-year-old Delia Aldridge Rick.

According to the Gaston County Police Department, 48-year-old James Michael Rick was charged with first degree murder and 51-year-old Melinda Kay Robinson was charged with accessory after the fact to first degree murder.

Robinson is an acquaintance of both Delia Rick and James Rick.

Police arrested James Rick and Melinda Robinson at a home on Old Carolina Mining Road, outside of Stanley, NC Wednesday.

The arrest operation took place in an area near East Gaston High School. The East Gaston Administration and School Resource Officer were notified and the school was placed on a temporary perimeter lockdown as a precaution. The lockdown was ended immediately after the operation was over.
