WILKES COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A Winston-Salem woman is facing murder and child abuse charges after investigators say she knowingly left her 9-month-old son in a car while she was at work Thursday, leading to the child’s death.
Officials say the baby’s mother, 23-year-old Kayla Rochelle Rodgers, took the infant to the Wilkes Medical Center. He was “lifeless and not breathing” when they got to the hospital, according to the report.
Deputies were called to the hospital and soon learned Rodgers “knowingly left the child in an unattended parked car while she was at work,” the report states. The baby was in the vehicle for several hours.
Rodgers was arrested and charged with one count each of murder and felony child abuse.
She was taken to the Wilkes County Jail where she is being held with no bond.
No further information has been released.
