CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - With both Pro-Ams and practice rounds in the books, it’s time to tee it up for the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship.

Play starts at 7 A.M. Thursday morning at the Quail Hollow Club and here are a few groups to watch.

At 7:40, defending champ Jason Day will go off on hole number 10. Day has had an up and down season as he manages a back injury. In his 6 stroke play events in this calendar year, he has 3 top 5 finishes including a 5th place finish at the Masters.

“I feel really good about the progress that I have made,” said Day. “Overall I feel like I am playing pretty good this week so I’m pretty confident about how my game is progressing especially up until right now.”

In the afternoon, two groups will garner huge galleries. At 12:40 P.M., 2012 winner of this event, Rickie Fowler will go off on hole number one with the #2 golfer in the world Justin Rose and Charlotte resident Webb Simpson.

Immediately after that group, the only 2 time winner of the Wells Fargo Championship Rory McIlroy will start his tourney along with Sergio Garcia and Tony Finau.

McIlroy has has great success here in Charlotte and thinks this course may be in the best shape it has ever been.

“The golf course is probably as good as it has been since all the changes back in 2015 and 2016--sort of getting ready for the PGA (Championship),” said Rory. “All the changes have sort of vetted in nicely and the course is in great shape.”
