CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The first day of the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship week provided memorable experiences in the first of two Pro-Ams, as well as the first practice day for those competing in the tournament.
Two golfers who were eager to get out on the course to practice were North Carolina Natives Webb Simpson out of Raleigh and Harold Varner III from Gastonia.
“It’s good, it’s exciting. It’s always nice coming home, the weather is good, just ready to get going honestly,” Varner said.
For Varner, this is the one stop on the PGA Tour he calls home, and he doesn’t take the opportunity to play here for granted.
“I know that this place is why I am who I am so I take pride in that," Varner said. "I understand when I play well and when they follow me week-to-week they get to see me this week and if I was to do really well it’s not about me so I get a thrill out of that.”
Monday also marked a first for first-year Charlotte coaches Will Healy and Ron Sanchez, as both participated in the Pro-Am.
“Truth is that humility is one of our pillars, and I do know who I am so I’ll let the pros be pros and today I’ll let my amateur status stand strong,” Charlotte head basketball coach Ron Sanchez said.
All jokes aside, the opportunity to continue to experience the Charlotte community is something both coaches greatly appreciate.
“I’ve got a chance to meet a lot of different people," Charlotte head football coach Will Healy said. "Got a chance to meet Ron Rivera last night. He was extremely hospitable, invited our staff by so it’s been worth it already and to play a great golf course and get a feel for what these professionals feel and I’ll get to see this weekend will be a lot of fun.”
“I’m so fortunate to be in a place that has this and provides this. Really excited to just be out here,” Sanchez said.
Tuesday will be another Practice day for golfers competing in the Wells Fargo Championship, and Wednesday the second Pro-Am will take place.
First Round play of the Wells Fargo Championship gets started on Thursday with the first round of golfers teeing off at 7 a.m.
