CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - High wind on Friday caused major issues at the Fred T Foard High School Soccer field.
Two grandstands were lifted off a concrete pad and thrown onto the playing field, crushing a fence along the way.
One soccer goal was also torn apart and thrown almost 100 feet. Neighbors say it all happened during sunny skies.
One man said it seemed like there were bursts of wind gusts in a short period of time.
“It is expensive,” said Robert Hoyle, Assistant Maintenance Director for the school system.
More than $40,000 in damage has been totaled so far. The school system does have insurance and a claim will be filed, he said.
Crews worked all day Monday to clear the field of all the debris.
Tuesday night is the last home game for the soccer team and it is Senior Night.
School officials say they will find a way to make it work, even without two of the grandstand bleachers.
