CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Marvin Ridge softball team won their first regular season conference title in six years with a 4-2 win over Parkwood on Tuesday night.
“It was fantastic. It was a long time coming - I mean 6 years in between that’s big, but in this conference it’s hard - there are so many quality teams in this conference year-to-year and these kids have worked so hard to get it," head coach Jeff Stovall said. "I was really proud of them for doing it, really proud of them.”
The Mavericks have three players that have committed to play softball at the collegiate level. Senior pitcher Gabby Baylog will head to Coastal Carolina, while catcher Taylor Walker, who leads the conference with 8 home runs, will take the field at Meredith College. Junior shortstop Ally Bigham has committed to UNC Charlotte.
But for now, their focus is postseason playoffs and bringing a title to Marvin Ridge.
“Next goal is conference tournament championship, we’ve got to go over to Parkwood and we’ll probably end up playing some of the teams we’ve competed against all season long. It’s going to be a hard fought battle over there as well. Anybody can win it, there’s at least 6 teams in this conference that can win the championship and then from there you move on to state playoffs," Stovall said. "If we can go over there and win that number 1 seed everybody will come to us and we’ll host. Hopefully be the number 1 seed in the west, and that would be huge to play here on your home field versus having to travel.”
Win or lose - most importantly this group has proven to be there for each other on and off the field, and have laid the foundation for many Mavericks to come.
“It’s like a family. It’s like 17 sisters out there and as coaches we just give them the tools they go out and execute. As a coach, if you can get them to buy in to what you’re selling you’re solid and everyone of these kids have done that from the year I’ve been here and it just keeps getting better every year,” Stovall said.
Conference tournament play beings on April 30th at Parkwood. The Mavericks earned a first-round bye and will play May 1st.
