IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Officials say a 14-year-old faces charges after reportedly setting a trash can on fire at a high school in Iredell County Wednesday.

According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on Wednesday around 1 p.m.

School administration alerted school resource officers at Lake Norman High School to respond to a fire on the second-story hallway boy’s bathroom of the school.

When the officials arrived in the area, they discovered the hallway filling with smoke. The fire department was called to respond to the high school and the fire was contained to a trash can in the bathroom.

Due to the smoke activating fire alarms throughout the school, the students and staff were immediately evacuated.

Additional Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Patrol units arrived on the scene to assist with the evacuation process, and investigated the fire.

Officials say since the incident was videoed by a juvenile student, and posted to his Snapchat, the video immediately became “viral".

Investigators quickly identified the teen who set the fire, and the person who videotaped the incident.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office forwarded their investigation findings to Juvenile Services for felony arson charges due to the suspect’s age.

The student has been suspended from Lake Norman High School.
