HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Easter may not be the biggest holiday travel weekend, but a lot of people are expected to be on the road - and they’ll find gasoline prices a lot higher than they found in their travels at Christmastime.

At least two stations had prices below $2 a gallon on New Year’s Day in Catawba County. On Wednesday, the prices were in the $2.53 to $2.63 range. At the Exxon station on Highway 321 drivers said it should not affect their plans this weekend but if the price continues to rise, they could rethink some summer travel.

Experts say the rising gas prices now are due to refinery issues, sanctions on oil from Iran and Venezuela, and cutbacks from OPEC that are affecting the global price.
