“I’m hurt, I’m disappointed. I feel like I let him down because I’m always there to protect him," said Lee’s mother, Sylvia Baker, "I really just want my son back.”

The 3-year-old who was caught in the crossfire and struck by a bullet fragment - identified by family as Aleeya Gaither - remains in stable condition and is expected to be OK.

Officials say when they arrived on the scene the victims were not there and had been taken to the hospital in a car.

Frye Regional Medical Center was placed on a lock down as a crowd gathered outside of the hospital.

The two victims did not know each other and officials say they believe Lee was the intended target.

At the same time, police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old who was found with a self-inflicted wound in Burke County. Just before 9 p.m., Hickory Police say they received a call that Zamare Nadja Davidson, a suspect in the shooting, was dead.

Police say they believe the shooting is a result of an argument between Davidson and Lee.

“I don’t know…who was shooting who, I just know it was a lot of shots," said neighbor Lula Flowers. “I heard a bunch of shots, pow pow pow pow, I got hit with a little pebble, little pebble hit me in the back because I felt it.”

A second suspect, Jonathan Laxton, was taken into custody at a home in Burke County. Laxton was charged with one count of accessory after the fact. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday May 3.
