Man arrested in connection to fatal shooting in Shelby

Man shot, dies in hospital in Shelby, homicide investigation underway

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - A man was arrested Thursday in connection to the fatal shooting of another man in Shelby Saturday.

According to the Shelby Police Department, officers arrested 36-year-old James Lewis Sanford on a charge for murder.

The incident happened on West Circle Drive.

Officers responded to the scene and found 35-year-old Tyrand Santrell Hopper suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Hopper was taken to Atrium Health Cleveland where he later died from his injuries.

Sanford was taken to the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Center where he is being held without bond.

Detectives are actively investigating this incident.
