CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - No one was injured when a day care roof collapsed in Catawba County Wednesday night.
The incident happened at Rainbow Childcare on Fairgrive Church Road SE following heavy rainfall in the area just before 7 a.m., officials say. The problem was discovered as employees arrived to open up for the day. A spokesperson for the company says the employees saw water covering the floor and called 911 for help. Firefighters discovered the collapsed ceiling in the center of the building. Parents were notified after the discovery.
Teachers and children were advised they could go to another Rainbow site in Conover. Ronni Baker was taking her 3-year-old son to the the facility that collapsed when she found out about it.
“It is a tragedy and I am thankful my son was not there,” Baker said, adding that it is crucial for her work to have a facility open for her son. “I need the day care.”
Hickory fire officials say the trusses collapsed and the ceiling fell through. No one was at the daycare when the incident happened.
Firefighters found that a portion of the ceiling had collapsed along with water damage in the center of the building. The main rooms affected are a lounge and a classroom.
Officials are still assessing the damage and what could be done to fix it. No timetable has been set for that yet.
