Man dies after being shot, crashing vehicle in Matthews-area neighborhood

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - A man killed in a shooting and crash in a Matthews-area neighborhood Saturday afternoon was identified by police as 21-year-old Keith Jawaun Samuels of Charlotte.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Bathurst Drive, by the Harris Teeter near the intersection of Idlewild Road and Margaret Wallace Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said officers were called to the scene after an SUV collided with a parked vehicle. They found Samuels inside the SUV with a gunshot wound.

Investigators say the shooting happened on Margaret Wallace Road and then the SUV traveled to Bathurst Drive, where the crash happened.

Medic confirmed Samuels was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center with very serious injuries. He died at the hospital a short time later.

Multiple emergency vehicles were at the scene. Officers closed the roadway and roped off the scene while they investigated.

Police have not said what may have led to the shooting or if anyone was taken into custody.
