CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Interstate 277 lane closures will be suspended during NBA All-Star weekend as the city prepares for around 150,000 visitors.
The recent closures along the heavily-traveled interstate are part of a $16.3 million project to improve 22 bridges along I-277 between 10th Street and I-77 at the John Belk Freeway.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says they will suspend the I-277 closures from Thursday morning (Feb. 14) through Monday night (Feb. 18).
Lane closures on Interstate 77 will be suspended from Friday morning (Feb. 15) through Monday night.
Barriers put in place to work on bridges over Elizabeth Avenue, Third Street and Fourth Street were removed on Jan. 18. The barriers were moved to focus on bridges on the inner loop over Third, Stonewall and McDowell Streets.
The construction has reduced traffic to one lane on I-277, causing a headache for commuters.
"The barriers will be in place around the clock so workers can safely perform concrete pavement repairs and place epoxy overlays on the bridge decks," NCDOT said in a release.
NCDOT says the entire project is expected to wrap up by July 2019, the Observer reports.
