Crime Stoppers: Police looking for man who robbed Waverly Chipotle

Chipotle restaurant robbed at gunpoint

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are trying to figure out who robbed a popular restaurant in a new shopping center in south Charlotte.

Officers gave WBTV exclusive video of a man stealing cash inside of the Chipotle restaurant in the Waverly development off Providence Road. The incident happened the night of December 19, 2018. Detective Brandon Miller from the CMPD Crime Stoppers unit provided a breakdown of what happened.

“The suspect enters the business shortly after they close. He enters after someone else leaves and tells the staff who’s at the register, go to the office and get me the money,” said Miller.

Parts of the incident were captured on the store’s surveillance cameras. In the video footage, the intruder can be seen rushing to the back of the store. He pushes one employee aside and targets another. Miller said the man will be charged with kidnapping in addition to robbery.

“The kidnapping charge came in where he forces one of the employees to go back to the office at gunpoint. When they force someone to go or to do something against their will in a situation like this, that’s where the kidnapping charge comes in,” explained Miller.

The video shows the man move one of the Chipotle employees into the back office. He forces the employee to help him collect cash from the store. The man appears to be holding a handgun. Miller says the workers inside of the store handled the situation well.

“The most important thing is that no one is hurt. Money and other items can always be replaced, but the loss of human life is something that can’t be replaced,” said Miller.

The video shows the man take off with the bag full of money. Detectives aren’t sure whether the man left in a car or on foot.

Miller said the man appears to be 6’2” and around 180 pounds. The intruder was wearing all black, with black shoes and bright red laces at the time of the incident.
