CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are searching for a man after a woman says he assaulted her while she was running on a popular greenway trail.
Thursday, Jan. 24 around 11 that morning, CMPD says a 38-year-old woman jogging on the Little Sugar Creek Greenway reported being assaulted. Police say the man asked to use her phone then attacked her from behind, grabbing her neck and chest. She screamed and the man ran away.
CMPD says during the week in the Westover area they have patrol units and bike patrols on the greenway paths. Police say no matter the area your running in, they suggest running in groups, avoid stopping for people you don’t know and make sure if you’re listening to music that you can still hear whats going on around you.
“Having keys in your hands, that could be a weapon in an opportunity as well," says Officer Johnathan Frisk with CMPD’s Crime Prevention.
“Like, do I have to pack a gun? You know what I mean? I mean what point are we getting to where its just ridiculous to try and run outside anymore," said one mother who also runs in the area.
“It’s tragic and I hope they catch the guy who did that," said another runner.
Police did not release a description of the man they’re looking for. If you do know anything about the case, you’re asked to give them a call. You can remain anonymous.
