Man charged with attempted murder

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - Rock Hill Police have arrested an individual following an assault on a victim in Rock Hill that led to a shooting and police pursuit before he was taken into custody.

Maurice Kentrell Hunt, 19, was arrested in connection with an incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon off of Eastwood Dr. in Rock Hill. Officers were dispatched to the area at 3:00 p.m. after reports came in of shots fired. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located the 72-year-old victim who reported that he had observed the suspect acting in a violent manner toward neighbors in a nearby house.

The victim, a Concealed Weapons Permit holder, stated that he retrieved his firearm from his vehicle but the suspect approached him and struck him in the back of the head, temporarily stunning him. The suspect was then reported to have taken the firearm and fired several shots that missed the victim before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

“First we heard the gun go off and that made us go to the window,” said Patricia Brindle, who lives next door. “I thought someone got killed the way he was running.”

Shortly after, officers received a call that Hunt was seen off of Coronet Court in Rock Hill and upon observing him and attempting to approach him, Hunt took off on foot. After a short pursuit, officers were able to apprehend the suspect and place him in custody.

Hunt is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of a gun during a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a handgun. He remains in custody and bond was denied at his initial hearing.

The shooting happened across the street from a community park.
