HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - A man was struck and killed while putting gas in his car on I-77 North in Huntersville Saturday night.
The incident happened on I-77 Northbound near I-485, between mile marker 19 and 20 in the Huntersville area.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Franklin Deepree Donaldson was hit and killed by a car while standing on the shoulder of the freeway.
Troopers say Donaldson was standing at the back left panel of his car putting gas in his car, while he was parked on the shoulder.
A driver ran off the right shoulder, struck and killed Donaldson.
The driver, Terence Christopher Blanks, was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the fatal crash caused major delays as a stretch of the highway was closed Saturday night.
The highway remained closed for an extended period of time for investigation.
Drivers were advised to seek an alternate route and to use caution and yield to responding units.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. No further information was released.
