RALEIGH, NC (CBS 17) - The Wake County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday that the 21 horses found dead on a southern Wake County property Friday died of starvation.

CBS 17 learned the horses — six large ones and 15 miniature horses — were at a farm in Henderson and moved to the Fanny Brown Road property sometime in November.

Janet Elaine Laven Burleson, 64, was arrested Wednesday in connection, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. She is charged with killing an animal by starvation and cruelty to animals, according to arrest records. Both are felonies.

Burleson is being held at the Wake County Detention Center under a $250,000 bond.

Neighbors who live near the property say they had not seen anyone come by to check on the horses in two months.
