CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Callum Montgomery became the 11th Charlotte 49ers player selected in the MLS Draft when FC Dallas picked him fourth overall in the 2019 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
“It has not sunk in yet, it is a dream come true,” Montgomery said. “This is a great day for me and my family; I want to thank everyone that helped me get here.”
Montgomery is just one of three Niners taken in the first round. He joins Mac Cozier and Ben Parry.
"We are extremely excited and proud for Callum,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “Having committed to our program and development culture over the past four years we know he is ready to take on the challenge of the MLS. He embodies what it means to be a Charlotte soccer player: fierce competitor on the field, incredible student in the classroom and wonderful ambassador of the program in the community. "
This past season Montgomery earned first-team United Soccer Coaches Association All-Southeast Region, Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Conference USA honors as well as being named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team. Montgomery was also a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Charlotte 49ers All-Conference USA midfielder Tommy Madden was picked in the second round, the 38th overall pick, by Orlando City SC in today’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Chicago.
