Special Olympics Athlete of the Month: Erykah Culbertson

Athlete of the Month: Erykah Culbertson

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Erykah Culbertson has been competing in the Special Olympics since 2005, and now she is training for the biggest moment of her Special Olympics career to date - the World Games. Erykah will represent Team USA in Track and Field, and will compete in three events: 100-meter dash, relay race and the running long jump.

"It's a once in a lifetime achievement and goal that Erykah had," Michael Culbertson, Erykah's dad and coach, said.

"It's like a dream come true. She really takes Special Olympics to heart," Wanda Culbertson, Erykah's mom, said.

What makes this moment even sweeter is that it's a family affair - after Erykah's coach left, dad stepped in.

"I think it's an awesome experience to be able to coach your daughter to go to the World Games. It's a special bond that we have. She's real competitive and I bring that out in her," Michael Culbertson said.

Erykah's competitive spirit shines through in her main goal for the World Games. "I hope I win," Erykah said.

But win or lose, the Special Olympics has inspired Erykah well beyond her next competition. “The sky’s the limit now. She even aspires to be a Special Olympics coach one day,” Wanda Culbertson said.
