CMPD investigating shooting death at east Charlotte establishment

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police are investigating a shooting that occurred at Smokey Joe’s Cafe on the 500 block of Briar Creek Rd. near the Chantilly neighborhood on Saturday evening.

Around 11:40 p.m., officials report that an unidentified suspect fired several shots into the parking lot and at the establishment. A man standing on the patio in front was struck by a bullet. After arriving at the scene, Medic pronounced the man deceased.

Major Ryan Butler, of CMPD, stated that this establishment was, “not a location where we have frequent complaints", and that detectives were working with witnesses who had been at the establishment during the shooting and also reviewing cameras that may have captured the incident on Monroe and Briar Creek at that time.

This remains an active investigation and no further information has been released at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.
