How busy is the new Monroe Expressway?

Bypass giving drivers speedier commute

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Monroe Expressway in Union County is one month old. Drivers who ride the toll road will soon start receiving invoices in the mail.

The N.C Turnpike Authority is reminding drivers to pay their bills as soon as they arrive in the mail because late fees will be assessed if not paid by the due date.

Turnpike officials say drivers are taking advantage of the open toll road drive to get away from the congested Highway 74.

WBTV requested data about vehicle usage of the bypass – which runs between 74/485 Interchange near Matthews and Marshville.

According to the Turnpike Authority:

  • The highest transactions are at the western  end {towards Matthews}
  • Recently, The Monroe Expressway averaged  about 60,000 transactions each day during the week.
  • The heaviest traveled day so far on the Monroe Expressway was Friday, December 21, with nearly 66,000 transactions.
  • November transponder sales reached nearly  23,500. The Turnpike Authority says that’s “more than double the previous  highest month since NC Quick Pass started distributing transponders in  2011.”
