CONOVER, NC (WBTV) - Another addition is on the way to the Conover Station complex in Conover. Ground was broken Thursday morning for the Norman Coley Amphitheater.
It is located next to the Conover Station building itself. The complex was started more than a decade ago when the city decided not to take a wrecking ball to a closed down factory building. Instead, the building was renovated and now houses NC Works, a library, meeting space and more.
“We took a liability and turned it into an asset,” said council member Kyle Hayman.
Officials say the original project and expansions that have taken place since have been a boost for the community.
“The city is growing,” said City Manager Donald Duncan.
The amphitheater will provide another weekend gathering spot, said officials, with regular concerts and other entertainment featured. Construction is expected to be finished by May with seating in the grassy hillsides for about 2,000 people. The entire project over the years from renovation of the factory building to new structures being built, to the park and this latest addition has come with an 18 million dollar price tag.
Much of that cost has been defrayed by state and federal grants and private funds. City officials say it has been a partnership that has bettered the community.
