CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
When it comes to car care, you’ve probably got the basics covered. You get routine oil changes and tire rotations, you take your car in when you need new brake pads, and you replace your battery when necessary. However, when was the last time you looked at your windshield wipers? They’re a pretty important part of your drive time safety and if they’re not in good condition, you’re doing yourself a big disservice. Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips to keep them in top shape AND save money!
Tip #1: Check them often for damage. Take a look at your windshield wipers on a regular basis to check them for any damage or excessive wear, especially the rubber on the blades. This is the part that wears down the fastest. If you notice damage, replace them ASAP because damaged blades won’t be able to do their job.
Tip #2: Don’t use them on a dry windshield. Windshield wipers are meant to be used on a wet surface – using them on a dry surface causes a lot of friction and drag and can wear them down and damage the rubber. If you need to use them to clear your windshield of pollen or some other debris, spray wiper fluid first.
Tip #3: Don’t use them on a dirty windshield. Using windshield wipers on a dirty windshield is a big no-no according to our Charlotte auto service techs. Sticky spots and hardened debris can damage the blades and cause a need for replacement. Scrub your windshield down with the squeegees at the gas station or a sponge at home to keep it clean.
Tip #4: Don’t use them to scrap ice or frost off the glass. It’s tempting to use your windshield wipers to scrape frost or ice off the glass, but this can quickly and permanently damage them. First, use a credit card or ice scraper to remove the frost or ice – then you can use the wipers to sweep the remains away.
Tip #5: Replace them on a routine basis. Your wipers, like any other part on your car, will need to be replaced on a routine basis because they wear down over time and with use. They’re typically replaced twice a year unless you put them through a lot of wear and tear; in that case you may have to replace them sooner. Some signs you’re due for replacement include streaking or not cleaning the glass off, or making squeaking noises when in use.
