Police arrest four people after stolen SUV crashes through backyard fence

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Four people were taken into custody after a crash involving a reportedly stolen vehicle in north Charlotte.

The incident ended just after 3 p.m. on Wondering Oak Lane, near Old Statesville Road. WBTV’s Sky3 was over the scene as a black SUV with open doors and still in drive - which had already been abandoned by the suspects - appeared to crash into the side of a home, then through a fence in the backyard.

The vehicle then came to rest after rolling down an embankment into a wooded area behind the home.

Police along with K9 officers could be seen searching the area and putting at least three people in handcuffs in the neighborhood.

On Friday, around 2 p.m, officers got a license plate reader hit for a motor vehicle that was stolen in Huntersville.

Officers say they found the vehicle on Independence Boulevard and tried to stop it. The vehicle did not stop and fled, but officers say they did not pursue the fleeing vehicle.

CMPD’s helicopter followed the vehicle through several areas.

The four people fled on foot from the moving vehicle near the intersection of Twin Drive and Wondering Oak Lane.

The vehicle kept moving towards a dead-end street, crashed through home’s fence and rolled down an embankment.

Officers located and arrested all four suspects near the 3700 block of Wondering Oak Lane.

Thomas Lindsay, 17, was identified as the driver and was charged with felony flee to elude, felony hit and run, possession of stolen motor vehicle and resist/obstruct/delay. Deron Early, 16, was arrested and charged with resist/obstruct/delay.

Along with Lindsay and Early, two juveniles who were in the vehicle and ran from officers were also apprehended. They were both charged with resist/obstruct/delay and turned over to their parents/guardians. Their names will not be released due to their age.

Lindsay is scheduled to appear in court next on Nov. 2 and Ealy has a court date set for Dec. 11.
